Preservation Napa Valley, has committed to a unique bridge conservation initiative: the clean up of Napa County's historic stone bridges. Made possible through the support of the County Board of Supervisors, Napa County Public Works and Napa County Recycling, volunteer crews will clean, weed, and clear shrubs and trash from Napa's beautiful stone bridges. Where there were once nearly 300 stone bridges and this County known as the County of Stone Bridges, there are now less than 100. Help us keep these icons in good shape. October, 2010-The first bridge cleaned up was Milliken Creek Bridge, just off the Silverado Trail. A small but seriously stalwart crew cleaned the bridge deck and sides from weeds, shrubs, trash, mud, and overgrowth so that it looks beautiful now! And, we planted daffodils! April 23, 2011- 9-noon: The Old Sonoma Road Bridge will be cleaned up, just off Hwy 12. And we'll tackle a very cool, private property bridge that once was the main road to Sonoma. If we get enough volunteers we will break into two groups. Bring gloves and tools. Many of the Countys remaining iconic bridges have been obscured with overgrowth and weeds. This project is planned to continue each year, moving all over the county to reach bridges that need TLC.
