Advocacy and Action
Preservation Napa Valley is dedicated to being the most engaged and responsive preservation resource for Napa County communities. Our events and outreach programs serve to educate, enable and develop solutions for the varied preservation challenges our communities face: ag preserve development proposals, vernacular building preservation, materials conservation, historic home and commercial maintenance issues, and other preservation-growth-conservation issues. We work with homeowners, developers, engineers, planners, contractors, civic leaders, architects, educators and real estate professionals so that we may continue to celebrate this very special place, Napa Valley.

Preservation Napa Valley Believes Tha
t:
  • Preservation is not simply about saving everything that is old;
  • Preservation is not only about saving important buildings but about preservation and conservation of place.
  • Preservation means the active use of historical buildings;
  • Preservation includes accommodating change;
  • Preservation means maintaining key character-defining features so that authenticity and richness are conserved in our communities
  • That one of our most effective means for preservation and conservation is to actively participate and advocate.

PNV encourages compatible new building alongside old structures so that our towns become attractive, unique destinations for both residents and visitors. We attend a variety of public City and County hearings, responding to preservation challenges as they relate to legal, fiscal or cultural issues. This knowledgeable and collaborative approach positions preservation as an important and integral part as City-County planning. We are driven towards solutions.

How can you support of advocacy efforts?

Becoming a member or Volunteer is the best way to support our advocacy efforts, as well as staying informed about issues in your City. Please join our mailing list to receive our newsletter, which highlights our current thoughts and concerns, projects and tours.

Advocacy

We believe preservation and conservation of the County's overall cultural landscape is an important community priority. PNV has been successfully involved in many advocacy projects, working with owners, developers or planners about incentives, sustainability, historical significance or structural issues so that a solution may be found to suit all. With the County's rich abundance of cultural resources, those very resources can powerfully contribute to the economic vitality of this Valley if solutions, incentives and policy are actively applied.

Adaptive Reuse

What is adaptive reuse? This is the 're-purposing' or rehabilitation of a structure or place so that it may once again contribute, be used and get back into the economic engine...instead of sitting empty. Adaptive reuse often times is the best solution for an old building as we figure out how to bring the past up to speed with the future!

PNV has developed adaptive reuse projects from Napa to St. Helena. These proposals are part of our community preservation programs, executed by University architecture students from the Bay area. These highly successful projects contribute crucial data that assist in securing grant support and designs for the re-purposing of project sites.

We are continually finding much needed adaptive reuse projects around the county but we do not have the human nor fiscal resources to undertake them: please donate today to enable us to grow these valuable programs.
